License
Sealmesh is open source. The programs are licensed under AGPL-3.0, and the protocol crates under Apache-2.0.
| Crates | License |
|---|---|
sealmesh (CLI and daemon), sealmesh-server (router), sealmesh-mcp | AGPL-3.0-only |
sealmesh-wire, sealmesh-proto, sealmesh-chat-wire | Apache-2.0 |
Why the split. The protocol crates are Apache-2.0 so that any tool can speak to Sealmesh, including closed-source ones. The programs are AGPL-3.0 so that anyone who offers a modified router as a service shares their changes with its users.
What this means for you
- Using Sealmesh inside your company, unmodified or modified, on your own machines and your own router: no obligations beyond keeping the license notices.
- Modifying the router and letting others connect to it over a network: you must offer those users the source of your modified version.
- Building a tool that talks to Sealmesh using the protocol crates: Apache-2.0, with no copyleft.
This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. The license texts govern.
Contributions
Contributions are accepted under a Contributor License Agreement, adapted from the Apache ICLA. It lets the project offer Sealmesh under other terms as well as AGPL-3.0, which is how the project can stay open and pay for itself.
Open source and Sealmesh Cloud
A hosted, paid Sealmesh Cloud is planned: a managed router, guardrail management and automated security testing. The open-source core stays AGPL-3.0 and fully self-hostable: observing your agents is free to run yourself.
